Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers
Representing New York Roofers
This union, founded in 1903, was known first as the International Slate and Tile Roofers Union of America. It joined forces with the International Brotherhood of Composition Roofers, Damp and Waterproof Worker, but remained independent. In 1919 the two unions merged to form the United Slate, Tile and Composition Roofers, Damp and Waterproof Workers Association. In 1978 it adopted its current name.
Today, the union represents around 22,000 workers who install all types of roofing and waterproofing systems, including low-sloped roofing systems (vegetative and solar photovoltaic roofs), structural waterproofing, steep-sloped roofing systems and air barrier applications.
The union began a safety and health program in 1978 after receiving a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. It also began providing training to apprentices and pre-apprentices and started investigating the consequences of exposure to toxic materials used on the job. Issues related to the use of asbestos are of particular importance to members, and the union has been instrumental in studying the levels of asbestos exposure among its members as well as the health consequences of that exposure.
